Cat Bullet

Weekend Arsenal Trip

Filed under: Rocky Mountain Arsenal — Cat @ 4:31 pm

Well, here is a very rare Sunday post…

We had a trip to the Arsenal this morning. We saw quite a bit and got some great photos.

Coyote

We saw these two fledgling hawks on the ground. We think they are juvenile Swainson’s Hawks.

Two Fledgelings

We saw some prairie dogs (as usual), but only one burrowing owl. True to form, he didn’t stay around long enough for me to get his picture.

Prairie Sunflower and Prairie Dog

We saw some White Tail does.

Doe, A Deer

A Female Deer

And some Great Blue Herons and Egrets.

Actually, right after I took the heron picture, a hawk came in and chased the herons off. There were wings everywhere. But I’d already put down my camera and missed getting pictures.

We saw a Loggerhead Shrike. I’ve only seen one other at the Arsenal, so this was a treat. He was quite photogenic.

All in all, a fun day at the Arsenal. Not too hot, lots of animals, and NO FLY BITES!!

  2. Thanks for the special tour, Catherine. We all had fun. Today we are off to Mt Evans to scenery and mountain goats. Robbie and I are very fond of mountain goats. We had a herd that surrounded our forest fire lookout station back in the (gasp) 50′s. We had that fun job during the summer while we were in college. The first year we shared the salary and job. The second and third years we each had our own stations.
