Funny Thing Happened Yesterday…

Swainson's Hawk

Well, a funny thing happened to me on the bus home yesterday.

The bus was packed – we were literally standing nose to armpit (no, that isn’t the funny part).

There was an accident on the highway that really slowed down our progress (no, that isn’t the funny part, either. What kind of person do you think I am, anyway??)

So, after dangling from my fingertips from the overhead bar for about 45 minutes, I was understandably tired when we pulled into the park and ride for the majority of people to get off the bus (I continue on for a little bit, so was looking forward to finally getting to sit down).

There, on the grassy bank that edges the park and ride was a beautiful Swainson’s Hawk. Probably had caught a mouse or something… Anyway, he caught my attention and I made a noise of some sort. People asked me what I saw and I started explaining.

Those same people got a really weird look on their face, and then quickly exited when the time came. I didn’t think much about it and figured that they just weren’t “in” to animals as much as I am.

About four or five minutes later, I just started laughing.

I had slipped into “Rocky Mountain Arsenal Tour Guide” mode and started talking about the migratory and breeding habits of those particular hawks….

Apparently standing in the front of a crowded bus (not to mention hanging on for dear life) brings out the Tour Gude in me.

Who knew???

  5. Good job on your tour guide persona. I can remember turning an entire subway car out New Yorkers into fast exiting to the next car don’t look back people when the travel agent tour group I was with started singing Christmas carols. :-) Good Times!
